Meanwhile, in the Under 21 Women’s Singles event Romanian success continued.
In the three ITTF Pro Tour tournaments of the year which have held events in that age group, Daniela Dodean has won on each occasion. She succeeded in Slovenia, Kuwait and Qatar.
In Daejeon, she lost in the first round, being beaten in seven games by Japan’s Moemi Terui; however, to the rescue came Elizabeta Samara.
She maintained Romanian pride by beating Japan’s Yuka Ishigaki in a gruelling seven games final, the Japanese defender making her European adversary fight for every success.
Road to Final
Victory for Elizabeta Samara but as in the final, the three previous rounds all proved testing affairs.
In the opening round she overcame Ildiz Meral Ali of Turkey in five games before defeating Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Ching in six games and second seed, Singapore’s Yu Meng Yu at the semi-final stage in a contest that went the full seven games distance.

Similarly Yuka Ishigaki had to be at her best; in the opening round she beat Korea’s Shim Se Rom in six games, then ousted Moemi Terui in four straight games before recording a close seven games win in opposition to Shim Se Rom’s colleague Seo Hyo Won.
