How To Be a Topspin Freak
By Larry Hodges, USATT Certified National Coach and Member of USATT Hall of Fame
What is a Topspin Freak? He's someone who likes to topspin . . . and Topspin . . . and topspin! No matter what you do, every rally turns into him topspinning, and you reacting to his topspin. Perhaps you'd like to be a Topspin Freak yourself?
To be a Topspin Freak means that you are going to topspin everything possible. That means anything that goes "deep," which we define as any ball that, given the chance, would not bounce twice on the table. How does one go about doing this?
The first thing you must do is develop good looping technique. This means working with a coach, and practice, Practice, PRACTICE! You can either be a two-winged looper (forehand and backhand loops) or a one-winged looper (usually forehand only). One-winged looping takes very fast footwork, but can be a lot of fun; however, don't expect to play this style effectively into old age. There are two-winged loopers out there still topspinning away into their 70s. A topspinning game is a rather physical game, but it will keep you in shape.
    Tactics of a Topspin Freak
Serve: Mostly serve short. Except at the higher levels, you don't have to worry much about short returns. If you serve short backspin, you'll probably get a deep push return. If you serve sidespin or topspin, you'll probably get a light topspin return. If you serve no-spin, you'll get either. And so you serve and [drum roll] loop. Of course, if your opponent can't loop your serve, you might serve long and [drum roll] loop. If the opponent does have a short receive, then serve more sidespin/topspin, or serve backspin and flip the first ball, then get ready to [drum roll] loop.
Receive: If the serve goes long, you [drum roll] loop. Since most serves tend to go long (except at the higher levels), this means you are going to [drum roll] loop most serves. If the serve is short, then you can either flip it (with topspin!) or drop it short, and hopefully [drum roll] loop the next ball. You don't want to push long too often as that allows your opponent to loop, and that's a no-no.
Rally: Let's get right to it: yes, you [drum roll] loop every chance. If your opponent loops first, then you try counterloop. Some lesser topspinners will block the first ball and then look to counterloop the next one. This is permissible, but not in the purist spirit.
The Ten Commandments for a Topspin Freak
    1. Thou shalt develop good looping technique.
    2. Thou shalt either develop both a forehand and backhand loop, or thou shalt have very fast footwork and only develop the forehand loop.
    3. Thou shalt use a thick inverted sponge with great rebounding effect; loud corking sounds when looping bring you one step closer to being one with the universe.
    4. Thou shalt keep the racket very low during rallies, as rackets are meant to move in an upward and forward direction, never downward.
    5. Thou shalt understand that the ball only revolves in one direction, and that is such that the top of the ball rotates rapidly away from you, and this is good.
    6. Thou shalt strike the ball so that it sinks into the sponge with a grazing angle, but never, ever shall it come into contact with the wood. This is verboten.
    7. Thou shalt topspin any ball that comes past the endline. Duh.
    8. Thou shalt never willingly let an opponent topspin first; but if thou shalt fall into this sin, then shalt beg forgiveness as thou counterloops.
    9. Thou shalt understand that topspin is not the means to the goal of winning; topspin is the end in itself. A true believer understands that with true topspin, winning is inevitable anyway.
    10. Thou shalt loop over and over and over and over and over, and then some more; be fruitful with your loops. Blessed be a ball that arcs high in the air, where the topspin pulls the ball down so that it lands deep on the table, creating consternation and admiration in your opponent.
    Happy topspinning!

Adevarul e ca e foarte fun sa joci asa ..... singura problema e daca nu-ti intra retopspinul ==> mai trebuie sa pui si bloc din cand in cand.
